Shakespeare, William Sonnets New York, NY State Street Press 2000 0681993014 / 9780681993013 First Edition Thus; Second Printing Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket Excellent condition, with minimal shelf wear. Unused/Unread/Unmarked Book.; 8.5 x 5.7 x .6 inches; 160 pages; Since their first publication in 1609, William Shakespeare's sonnets have begged a tantalizing question-for whom were they intended? The dedication comes not from the author himself but from the publisher, and the address to "Mr. W.H." may well be a deliberate attempt at mis-direction. In the sonnets themselves, the poet first devotes his thoughts to a beautiful young male friend; then shifts his focus to his mistress-a dark femme fatale. The continuing search for their true names and identities has spawned widespread conjectures among Shakespeare scholars. It is also entirely possible that Shakespeare composed this particular set of sonnets simply as a literary exercise, for practice or for the pleasure of a patron. Whatever his motivation, Shakespeare's poetic lines have inspired, and will continue to inspire, hosts of writers, musicians and, of course, lovers. Price:

Shakespeare, William Sonnets and Other Love Poems Ann Arbor, MI Borders Classics 2003 1587260972 / 9781587260971 Reprint Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket Unused/Unread/Unmarked Book. Some rubbing of the dust jacket. ; Borders Classics Ser. ; 205 pages; Sonnets and Other Love Poems: During his life Shakespeare first gained attention as a poet. "Venus and Adonis" (1593) tells the story of the goddess's attempt to woo a beautiful youth and was very popular in it's time in 1601 Shakespeare's enigmatic elegy for two birds. "The Phoenix and the Turtle" (i.e., turtledove) was included in a volume of verse by Robert Chester. Since his death Shakespeare's poetic fame has rested chiefly with the sonnets published in 1609 (with "a Lover's Complaint." appended)--though almost certainly written before 1600 --and dedicated to an unknown. "Mr. W. H." the 154 sonnets circle around a love triangle involving Shakespeare. A handsome heedless youth and a " Dark Lady." For centuries as speculation about the identity of "Mr. W. H." have failed to yield to definitive answer that "the portrait of Mr. W. H." by Oscar Wilde provides a most entertaining theory. Price:
