Slight foxing on the outside edges of book; otherwise, clean-unmarked book. ; Trade PB; B&W Illustrations; 5 3/4 x 8 1/4; 324 pages; Among the great unsuspected treasures of the New World are its native literatures. Long before Europeans first set foot on the American continent, Indian texts had been recorded in various ways, including hieroglyphs and pictographs. In this book we see how the signs and symbols used by the ancient Mexicans, and their method of setting them down on paper, bear a close affinity with recording systems used by peoples both to the north and south--from the Algonkin of the Great Lakes area, with their birchbark scrolls, to the peoples of Peru. Such "classic" American texts provide us with an "image" of the New World as they explore a number of central themes: national and tribal origins; the lore of the planter and the hunter; and the activities of the warrior, the healer and the poet or scribe. This book, by commenting on and translating carefully selected texts, tells a story which is not widely known. When taken together, these texts are a revelation of the everyday experiences of native peoples in every part of the continent - their sufferings in time of war or famine, and, not least, their devastation at the hands of the invaders of the Old World.
