Very good, with minimal shelf wear, the dust jacket is missing and the back free end page has two lines of writing. ; ; 195 pages; The preface indicates: Readers of this lecture-cycle who do not know from their own experience what took place, while it was being delivered, in the Theosophical Society under Annie Besant, will perhaps object to the polemic tone sounded in several passages, especially in those directed against the just mentioned personality's Christ-conception. In order to understand this tone one must realize that, in those days, Annie Besant's authority was still unchallenged by many for whom these lectures were intended; and that, moreover, the lecturer had to defend a Christ-conception in no way different from the one he had formerly maintained. Now, since these battles have receded into the past, many believe the polemic passages could be deleted. Yet, in the editors' opinion, the lectures should be preserved, for historic reasons, just as they were given. Besides, for some readers it might not be uninteresting to know against what superstition, repellent to ever Occidental sentiment, the present Christ-conception had to be defended. Anyone seeing this matter in its true might will certainly recognize that the lecturer was in no way concerned with the dogmatic quarrels so customary among societies and sects who are dabbling in world views. He wanted to set facts that could be justified before his scientific conscience against a distorted creed motivated by personal interests. And, although one might well believe that this cree's absurdity was sure to condemn it in the eyes of rational men it was held up, within the Theosophical Society, as something equivalent to the conceptions brought forth by the lecturer. In the world of reality, even things running counter to all rational thinking may play their part.
